Has Israel’s Leadership Strayed from Jewish Teachings? Examining Religion, Politics, and Justice

Introduction

Recent Israeli military actions in Gaza and the hardline policies of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government have sparked a critical debate, Has Israel’s leadership abandoned the core ethical teachings of Judaism?; While the Torah, Bible, and Quran all emphasize justice and compassion, some argue that Israel’s political decisions contradict these sacred principles.

1. Sacred Texts Condemn Oppression

All Abrahamic scriptures—the Torah, Psalms, Bible, and Quran**—explicitly forbid injustice and oppression:

Torah (Exodus 22:21)

Do not mistreat or oppress a foreigner, for you were foreigners in Egypt."

Psalms (37:28)

"For the Lord loves justice and will not forsake His faithful ones."

Gospel of Matthew (5:7)

Jesus (Isa AS) taught: "Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy."

Quran (Al-Ma'idah 8)

"Do not let hatred of a people lead you to injustice. Be just, for that is closer to righteousness."

These texts share a common moral foundation: justice, mercy, and the prohibition of cruelty.

2. Is Israel’s Government Acting Against Jewish Ethics?

Critics argue that Netanyahu’s policies—particularly in Gaza and the West Bank—violate Jewish ethical teachings:

- Civilian casualties in Gaza contradict the Torah’s emphasis on protecting innocent life.

-Settler violence and land seizures defy biblical commands against theft and oppression.

-Collective punishment (blockades, bombings) goes against the Jewish principle of  "Tzedek" (justice).

Jewish Voices Against Government Policies.

- Neturei Karta, an anti-Zionist Orthodox Jewish group, argues that political Zionism distorts true Judaism.

- Israeli human rights groups (B’Tselem, Breaking the Silence) document abuses they say violate Jewish morals.

3. Is Israel Becoming a Secular (or Anti-Religious) State?

While Israel defines itself as a "Jewish state," its policies are often driven by nationalism, not religious law.

-Secular Zionism: Many early Zionist leaders (like David Ben-Gurion) were secular.

-Political Exploitation of Religion:Netanyahu’s alliance with far-right religious parties (like Otzma Yehudit) uses Judaism for political power, not spiritual guidance.

- Protests in Israel: Thousands of Israelis, including Holocaust survivors, have protested the government’s actions as "un-Jewish."

4. Conclusion: A Crisis of Ethics, Not Faith

The issue is not Judaism itself, but how political leaders misuse religion.

- Judaism teaches justice—but some Israeli policies appear unjust.

-The Torah condemns cruelty—yet Palestinian suffering continues.

- True faith requires moral consistency something protesters and rabbis demand from their government.

Final Thought:

"If a government commits oppression in the name of religion, it is not religion—it is power."
