The Time for Real Action on Palestine Is Now.
The Time for Real Action on Palestine Is Now.
A Shift in U.S. Strategy
For decades, the United States has maintained unwavering support for Israel. Yet global realities are shifting. Even former President Donald Trump appeared to recognize that unconditional backing for Israel no longer serves America’s international standing. In Washington there is growing awareness that working with Muslim nations to craft a lasting solution for Palestine is not only morally necessary but also strategically sound.
A Muslim-Led Peacekeeping Force in Gaza
A practical path forward would be the deployment of a peacekeeping force in Gaza composed primarily of troops from Muslim-majority countries under a United Nations mandate. Such a force, operating under Chapter VII of the UN Charter, could ensure civilian protection, monitor ceasefires and enable humanitarian access. Drawing on the lessons of UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, established 1978) and UNPROFOR (United Nations Protection Force in the Balkans, 1992), the UN already has precedents for large-scale missions in conflict zones.
Rising Muslim Unity and Shifting Power Dynamics
Recent defense agreements between Pakistan and several Arab states demonstrate that the Muslim world is beginning to act collectively. This emerging solidarity signals the end of impunity for those who perpetuate aggression and occupation. A UN-authorized Muslim-led force would complement, not contradict, this unity by providing legitimacy and structure under international law.
Global Consensus for a Two-State Solution
Even the United States and Europe now openly acknowledge the two-state solution as the only viable path forward. This shift is not accidental. It reflects global public opinion becoming unified against Israel’s ongoing violations and decades of consistent advocacy by writers, thinkers, and leaders who have called for justice and peace. The UN General Assembly has repeatedly reaffirmed the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination in resolutions such as A/RES/67/19 (2012), which granted Palestine non-member observer state status.
The UN’s Moral and Legal Responsibility
The time for statements and symbolic gestures is over. The United Nations must move beyond non-binding resolutions and take enforceable steps under Articles 39–42 of the UN Charter, which empower the Security Council to authorize actions necessary to maintain or restore international peace and security. A Muslim-led peacekeeping force under UN command would represent not just another mission but a fulfillment of the UN’s founding promise in Article 1: to take effective collective measures for the prevention and removal of threats to peace.
A Call for Immediate Action
If the international community truly believes in human rights and international law, it must act now. Gaza and the West Bank should not see another generation of war but the dawn of a just and lasting peace. The credibility of the entire multilateral system depends on delivering justice where it has been delayed the longest.
